Catalogue Note

'This view of the meeting of Ettrick and Yarrow bought for its association with my beloved Bowhill. All of the reminders of that bit of the borders where my heart belongs. Not for nothing did I exclaim when my father took me along the Duchess' Drive and gave me my first sight of a moon "but I belong here". Psychologists please note.' Sir David Scott

The Ettrick Valley is in the Scottish Borders close to Selkirk where Tom Scott was born in 1854. The present watercolour depicts the confluence of the Yarrow and Ettrick rivers from a vantage at Haining close to the estate of Bowhill, the seat of the Duke of Buccleuch, Sir David Scott's cousin. Tom Scott painted many views in the Borders whilst living at Leslie Cottage in Selkirk for the last thirty years of his life.
