Catalogue Note
The culture-loving hostess Mrs Cimabue Brown, the poet Jellaby Postlethwaite and the artist Maudle are central characters in du Maurier's satires on the Aesthetic Movement that appeared in Punch.
The series of ten caricatures, drawn in the style of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, commenced in 1880 with 'Nincompoopiana – The Mutual Admiration Society' and ended in the May of the following year with 'Frustrated Social Ambition'. Though, therefore only a year or so in duration, these brilliantly witty drawings are seen as the prime caricatures of the Aesthetic Movement.
