Catalogue Note
Du Maurier was born and educated in Paris, but moved to London at an early age. He drew black and white illustrations for Punch from 1860 which chiefly satirised middle class society. In 1864 he joined the staff and a year later began literary contributions. He also illustrated stories for Cornhill Magazine and published, in the first instance serially, in Harper's Magazine, three novels, Peter Ibbotson of 1891, the phenomenally popular Trilby of 1894 and The Martian of 1896.
