Catalogue Note
This delightful sketch dates to the late 1820s or early 1830s as Cox visited Calais on three separate occasions during his career: in 1826, in 1829, and lastly in 1832. Inspired by its architecture, light and coastal scenery Cox made many sketches of the town, including its pier. Upon his return to England, he exhibited two finished watercolours entitled Calais Pier at the Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1831 and 1833, (see N. Neil Solly, Memoir of the life of David Cox, 1973, p. 321-332)
