Catalogue Note

A watercolour of a similar subject, entitled A Bumper of Boats, was humorously described by von Meier in his book, 'In a ribald spirit Rowlandson depicts an unusual method of hailing small boats, with the crew of one clearly having more fun at the game than the two aghast passengers in the other.' (See Hurt von Meier, The Forbidden Erotica of Thomas Rowlandson 1756-1827, 1970, p. 104).
