Description
- Antoine Pesne
- Portrait of a musician, half length, wearing a blue coat with a white chemise, tuning his violin
- oil on canvas
- 81.3 by 64.8 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is darker and warmer in tone, and the highlights are less bright than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining. The paint surface has grown a but dry, resulting in a tendency towards flaking. A few small spots of paint loss are visiblein the centre in the scarf, in the coat centre right, in the hand and violin to the right, and in the lower right corner. A few filled and retouched damages are visible to the naked eye in the left sleeve, above the left shoulder and in the background upper left. Furthermore, a few tiny discoloured retouchings can be observed around the head and in the scarf. The paint surface is covered with a dirty, yellowed layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals some additional smaller retouchings in the hair and face, and in the hand. Offered in an ornate gitl wood frame with a diagonal crack in the lower right corner, and a few minor chips along the right edge. (MW)
