  • oil on canvas, unlined
  • 103.7 by 154.5 cm.

Provenance

Fideikommiss. G. Gustav Adelman, according to an inscription on the reverse.

Condition

The actual painting is softer and slightly less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining (glue). Stretcher marks are slightly visible along the edges. There is a small vertical tear of approx. 3 cm visible to the upper left, and a smaller one to the upper centre. Older repaired and retouched damages are visible close to the edge centre right, and in the lower left and right corners. Otherwise, the paint surface is in good condition. Particularly the brushwork in the highlights has been beautifully preserved. Small retouchings can be observed in the ground above the lower edge and in the lower right corner. The paint surface is covered with a dirty and milky layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the repaired damages and retouchings, and furthermore reveals additional tine scattered retouchings throughout, e.g. in the background centre left, and in the leafs and foliage to the right. Offered in an ebonised wood frame with a gilt fillet in good condition. The additional painting is softer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is unlined. The paint surface is in fair condition. No major damages are apparent. An area of tiny retouched paint losses is visible right of the hair. Two thin retouched scratches are visible upper centre and lower light. Further retouchings can be observed in the sky and in the dead game. The paint surface is covered with a glossy layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the aforesaid retouchings and reveals additional scattered retouchings and strengthening throughout, e.g. in the grapes and in the mushrooms. Offered in a carved black wood frame with gilt fillets and decorated with stylised scroll motifs, in fair condition. (MW)
