Description
- A bird's eye view of an army drawn up in battle formation
- charged with a coat-of-arms upper right
- oil on canvas
- 80.6 by 109.2 cm.
Condition
The actual painting is greener and less yellow in tone that the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas has a stable relining. Stretcher marks are slightly visible along the left and right edges. There are some tiny paint losses and a minor tendency towards flaking along the lower edge. Retouchings can be observed in the sky. The paint surface is under a rather coarse craquelure pattern and under a slightly dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under ultra violet light confirms the retouching in the sky and reveals additional retouchings throughout. However, the coat-of-arms and the figures have been wonderfully preserved. Inspection under UV-light furthermore reveals a small repaired vertical tear of approx. 5 cm. along the left edge, and another horizontal one along the right edge. Offered in a plain wood frame with a gilt fillet, in fair condition. (MW)
