The globe with large section of patches and inpainting above the constellation LEO MINOR, some patches and inpainting around the constellation SERPENTAR approximately 6-inches in length,some infilled cracks to both poles with areas of inpainting, craquelure throughout, overall with some minor hairline cracks and areas of inpainting, the horizon ring with three diagonal inpainted cracks, some wear around meridian ring slots, some slight separation at lines of construction, the painted decoration to the base later with and chips and small areas of inpainting, the base is probably mahogany, the stem with slight crack at join with one leg, one leg with age crack, some re-gluing to legs at join with stem, the stand now lacking its compass and stretchers, overall with some old marks, scratches and scuffs consistent with age and use.

The firm of Cary was established by John Cary (c.1754-1835), a noted mapseller, and his brother William (c.1760-1825), an instrument maker. The firm published their first globes in 1791 and by the end of the 18th century had established themselves as one of London's foremost globe manufacturers.
