Description

  • height 4 ft. 11 in.; width 46 1/2 in.; depth 12 in.
  • 149.8 cm; 118.11 cm; 30.48 cm
in the form of a palace façade, now fitted as a hanging shelf and extended in the back, with lighting.  Losses, probably the upper section to a cabinet.

Condition

overall very good condition with minor losses to ivory inlay., stiles at back formerly fitted with finials, arch of haveli now lacking 1 ½ inch ends, replacements to bottom of arch at sides, now painted to stimulate inlay, lacking pierced panel above central arch of verandah, minor losses to flanking pierced panels.

Hoshiarpur is a city located in the north-east part of the Indian state of Punjab and was a center of the finest Punjabi ivory inlay work in the latter part of the 19th century (see Dr. Amin Jaffer, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, 2001, pp. 285-293.)
