Catalogue Note

This centerpiece is based on a design for a "Surtoute" by William Kent, published by John Vardy in 1744.  Kent's design, which included a plateau, canopy and pair of lanterns, was interpreted by George Wickes in a 1745 epergne for Frederick, Prince of Wales, for the Prince's pavilion at Vauxhall.  Later additions to the epergne were made by John Bridge in 1829, and Robert Garrard in 1847 (see Elaine Barr, George Wickes Royal Goldsmith 1698-1761, pp. 170-71).
