the concave-fronted top and slightly rounded back with inlaid oval panel within quarter veneering and a crossbanded edge above a conforming case fitted with four mahogany-lined drawers, the top drawer formerly fitted for boxes and compartments.  Lacking fitments to top drawer, restorations.

Overall restored condition, the top with some slight rippling and with some minor lifting to veneers, some vertical age cracks to side panels, some areas of lifting to bandings of drawer fronts, top drawer now with baize lining and originally compartmentalized, drawer linings are mahogany, lifting to bandings above lower apron, some feet pieced, feet with some inpainted veneer patches, underside with light yellow wash, overall with some old marks, scratches, scuffs and bruises consistent with age and use.

Thomas Sheraton in The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, 1793, describes similar dressing chests: 'These chests are also in a new plan, particularly as the common slider for merely writing on is turned into a shallow drawer, which contains a little writing flap . . . and the height is . .  governed by the slider, which runs thirty-two or thirty-three inches from the floor . . . and their breadth is twenty-two or twenty-three inches'.
