This original illustration was reproduced on page 13 of Kenneth Grahame's Bertie's Escapade, as printed by Methuen in 1949. The short story about Bertie ("a pig of action") and the two rabbitsd, Peter and Benjie, was first published within First Whisper of The Wind in the Willows in 1944 but was not illustrated. Shepard's illustrations were added for the first separate volume publication five years later.

"Splendid!" said Bertie. "Now, we'll go right up to the house, and sing our bewitching carols under the drawing-room windows... They hurried up the drive, and planted themselves under the windows.
