Condition

The first: The work is on wove paper which has not been laid down. The edges of the sheet, and the upper edge in particular, have sustained some dirt. There are also some tiny spots of surface matter across the sheet. Held under a sheet of perspex which has sustained some scratches and abrasions, and presented against a cream backsheet. Catalogue Note

The titles Aduton and Sekos refer to the Greek words for shrine and sacred enclosure and provide an insight into the overall theme for the artist's work from the period. As Michael Raeburn has explained, 'these series evoke the anticipation of reaching a rubicon, a point of no return, the gate to an aduton enclosing a void, an emptiness, that has its own life within' (Raeburn, Introduction to Paul Feiler Connections, exh.cat., Redfern Gallery, London and Le Cadre Gallery, Hong Kong, 2002, p.9).
