Provenance

Given by the artist to her sister-in-law, Ann Constance Roberts ("Nan"), in return for storing the artist's pictures in Hampstead during the Second World War, and thence given to the present owner, her nephew

Exhibited

Southport, Atkinson Art Gallery, 1954.

Condition

The canvas is unlined. A scratch, approximately 7cm. in length, is visible in the upper left quadrant. The canvas undulates slightly across the surface. There are areas of paint loss to the edges of the canvas where the frame appears to have rubbed against it. There is some craquelure along the upper edge in the upper left quadrant. Examination under ultra-violet lgiht reveals three small vertical lines of fluorescence, each less than 4cm in length, in the upper right quadrant. These may be retouching but they rather appear to be drips on the paint surface. Held in a white painted composition frame which is likely to be original.
