Condition

The canvas is in original condition. There are minor stretcher marks along each edge and the canvas undulates very slightly in areas. There are some infrequent minor lines of craquelure and a speck of paint loss near the left edge in the lower left quadrant, most of which coincide with the stretcher marks. Otherwise the paint surface is in good overall condition. There is no sign of retouching under ultra-violet light. Held in a simple rectilinear painted wooden frame. The present work, painted in 1979-80, is a smaller version of a larger oil, Large House with Two Gables, painted in 1980 and purchased by the Tate in 1995.
