The canvas has been re-lined. There is a diagonal scratch, approximately 7cm. in length, to the paint surface in the lower right quadrant, a vertical scratch, approximately 4cm. in length to the lower left quadrant and a further vertical scratch, approximately 6.5cm. in length in the upper right quadrant. This last scratch appears to coincide with a line of craquelure. There are areas of craquelure and paint separation throughout the work. Other marks are visible across the surface. Examination under ultra-violet light reveals areas of fluorescence in the hair and on the face and chest of the sitter. These appear to be very old areas of retouching. Further retouching is visible including a repair to a tear across the forehead. Held in a gilded rectilinear frame with decorative motifs in the corners.
