Work relined. The ultra violet light reveals a strong fluorescent varnish homogeneously spread ans sone retouches: three over the lower part of the hut (cm 1x1) and one along the lower right-hand edge; other lower right-hand side (cm 12x5; cm 10x5; cm 4x2) and smaller ones over the boy's feet. There is a small loss lower left-hand side next to the pumpkin and one over the tree in the top part of the composition. In the middle of the upper section of the work some craquelure are visible with little detaches of pigments. There are retouches lower right-hand side and next to the signature. It is suggested a structural consolidation.

Dopo aver frequentato l'Accademia di Firenze sotto la guida di Carlo Markò il giovane, Adolfo Tommasi conobbe Lega ed entrò a far parte della cerchia di Fattori e Signorini, dedicandosi allo studio dal vero del paesaggio toscano e intensificando via via la propria tavolozza.

Esempio della raggiunta maturità artistica del pittore è Le zucche, in cui le ruvide assi di legno del capanno fungono da sipario tra il primo piano con il contadinello addormentato e il folto del bosco, a cui conduce un sentiero ombroso, ma penetrato da improvvisi tocchi di luce.

Le larghe foglie carnose sul terreno ricordano quelle del celebre Ore calde, dove un'analoga impostazione prospettica spinge l'osservatore all'interno del dipinto lungo la linea obliqua tracciata dal pesante carro che avanza con lentezza, oppresso dal solleone.
