Condition
The canvas has been relined and the edge of the original canvas can be seen along the left edge. Some scattered craquelure and a discoloured varnish throughout; may benefit from a light clean. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching to edges and old infilling to craquelure around the tree area. Suggestion of scattered spots eslewhere underneath an opaque varnish. Held in a decorative composite frame.

Catalogue Note
L'un des paysagistes français les plus attachants, François Louis Français, dans sa jeunesse, a travaillé dans les environs de Paris, à Fontainebleau d'abord, où il rencontra Corot et Caruelle d'Aligny, mais aussi Marly, Saint Cloud, Sèvres et surtout Bougival. Il séjourna trois ans en Italie entre 1846 et 1849, ce qui éclaircit beaucoup sa palette. A partir de 1850 il voyage souvent à travers toute la France, séjournant en Bretagne, Normandie, dans les Alpes, en Alsace, etc...
A partir de 1873 il réside à Nice l'hiver, à Plombières l'été.
La qualité lumineuse de ses tableaux reflète l'influence de Corot et Daubigny, tandis que son goût du dessin, du détail est plus proche de ses amis Caruelle d'Aligny et Gigoux.
