Condition
There are some surface cracks to the panel along the upper edge. The painting is covered in a discoloured varnish and could bvenefit from a light clean. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching along edges and scattered elsewhere through, under a thick varnish. Held in a decorative plaster frame.

Catalogue Note
Artiste délicat, Defaux fut élève de Corot. Il exposa régulièrement aux Salons de Paris, surtout des paysages de Normandie et des sites de la forêt de Fontainebleau. Doué d'un sentiment de la nature très raffiné, Defaux a mis dans ses tableaux un peu du charme pénétrant et des qualités de coloriste de son maître (cf E Benezit, Dictionnaire des peintres, sculpteurs etc..., Paris 1999, tome IV, p.339)
