Théodule Augustin Ribot est un peintre d'histoire, de compositions religieuses, de scènes de genre, de portraits et de natures mortes. Il commence sa carrière par des tableaux de style Académique puis par la suite il devient l'un des fondateurs du Salon du Champ de Mars. Ribot tout comme, Alphonse Legros, Fantin Latour et Whistler admire beaucoup Gustave Courbet et sa volonté de réalisme.
