Painting is darker than the catalogue shows; Slighlty worn on the upper part; One restored tear on the upper red center part (6 cm); one patch on the reverse; Very few repaints scattered on the surface; Original canvas.

Catalogue Note

Clairin a visité l'Espagne en 1868-1869 en compagnie d'Henri Regnault. Il y retourne en 1871 avec Fortuny; il est enthousiasmé par le pays et nombre de ses tableaux évoquent le souvenir de ses voyages espagnols. Citons, entre autres, les Maures vainqueurs en Espagne (1885, Agen, Hôtel de ville), le Massacre des Abencérages (Rouen, musée des Beaux Arts), ou encore le Goûter espagnol.
Ami et peintre attitré de Sarah Bernhardt, il a laissé de nombreux portraits et dessins représentant la célèbre actrice, souvent en costume de théâtre. Dans ses tableaux les visages des femmes rappellent souvent celui de Sarah Bernhardt.
