Catalogue Note
During his stay in Paris (1903-1913), Isaac Israels gave the present lot to the French artist Th.A. Steinlen (1859-1923). From 1910 onwards, Steinlen and Israels became close friends. Israels supported him financially and both artists corresponded regularly up to 1922. In June 1914 Steinlen and his niece Marguerite visited Israels in London (see illustration). The present lot was consigned to Mak van Waay in 1955 by the daughter of Steinlen.
This lot comes with a statement of authenticit\y by the auction house Mak van Waay in Amsterdam, dated 2 February 1955.
