Catalogue Note

According to L.C.J. Frerichs (catalogue Rijksprentenkabinet, 1961), Breitner painted the present lot in the 1880's, when the artist was influenced by Jacob Maris in his colouring. In the depiction of the face Frerichs sees traces of the art of Cormon. Taking this in consideration, it would mean that the present lot probably dates from 1884, when Breitner visited Fernand Cormon in his Paris studio. Compare: J. Sillevis, A. Tabak, Het Haagse School boek, Zwolle/Den Haag 2001, p. 370. Paul Hefting dates the watercolour a year earlier, in 1883.
