Catalogue Note

The present lot depicts a famous subject in the artist's oeuvre: the peat-cutting fields near Kampen (also known as 'Het Zwijnsleger' near Grafhorst). Gabriël got to know this place through his student Willem Bastiaan Tholen, who lived in Kampen for a while and invited him to work over there. From 1880 onwards they often worked near Kampen during the summer. The present lot can be compared to a famous oil painting of the same subject, which Gabriël executed in 1889 (collection Haags Gemeentemuseum, The Hague).
