Catalogue Note

Although J.H. van Mastenbroek regularly painted winter views of Rotterdam, Overschie and Schiedam, the scenes of skaters in Dutch polder landscapes are quite rare in his oeuvre. Besides the present lot, which always stayed in private hands, only one other version is known, also painted in 1933 ('Schaatsenrijders'). Cf. A. Glavimans, J.H. van Mastenbroek, Rotterdam/Antwerpen 1946, illustration 127.
