Catalogue Note
Akkeringa became most famous for his lively beach scenes, which he painted in Scheveningen. Unlike Philip Sadée or Jozef Israels, who depicted the harsh life of the fishermen, Akkeringa chose more cheerful and optimistic subjects, like carefree children playing on the beach. These sunny scenes earned him his greatest fame.
The present lot always remained in collection of the artist. According to a handwritten label on the back Etie Akkeringa, the artists' daughter, presented this watercolour to Mr. Willering as a token of her appreciation.
This watercolour can be compared to an oil painting of the same subject, illustrated in 25 Jaar Kunsthandel R. Polak, The Hague 2001, pp. 136-137. A charcoal study for the present lot is illustrated in Ph. Zilcken, The Studio, 1911, p. 136.
