Catalogue Note

Around 1890 Tholen painted several town views that are very close to Amsterdam Impresssionism in style and subjet matter. Although Tholen is better known as a landscapist, his townscapes are brilliant in execution and can be considered as true highlights of Dutch painting around the turn of the century. The present lot always remained in private hands and depicts a physician's carriage in the streets of Voorburg. The painting can be dated around 1889.
