Catalogue Note
The Austrian born painter Anton Weiss (Falknov 1801-Ceska Lipa 1851) studied at the Academy of Amsterdam under J.A. Daiwaille. After finishing his studies, he lived and worked in Amsterdam for 24 years, from 1822 till 1846. As a result of this lengthy stay in Holland, he is mostly regarded as a representative of Dutch romanticism. Not without reason: his extremely refined and colourful still lifes fit in well with a Dutch tradition establised by for instance Jan van Os and the brothers Gerard and Cornelis Van Spaendonck. The talented Weiss left us only very few paintings. Besides the fact that he only reached the age of 51, he also worked very long on one piece, as can be deduced from the painstakingly precise manner in wich he painted the flowers. The present lot is a rare and undisputed highlight in the oeuvre of the artist.
