A rare George Jones majolica 'Pallissy vase' ewer circa 1873

modelled as an ovoid ewer, in the style of Bernard Palissy, with lizards, shells and leaves in relief on a cobalt ground, set with a serpent handle, the interior glazed in turquoise, impressed GJ monogram within a circle, indistinct painted shape number. Some restoration to foot and handle.

The handle has been broken off, possibly into two or three pieces and restored back on. The foot is extensively restored and it is impossible to see the extent of the original damage - the restoration is well done.

Nicholas Dawes, Majolica, p. 39, illustrates a ewer of this form, together with its original design drawing, and notes that this is the only example of George Jones majolica "executed in the manner of Bernard Palissy".

A vase of this form with a brown ground was sold in these rooms, March 11, 199, lot 123; and two further examples were sold at Sotheby's, London, November 24, 1998, lots 419 and 420.
