Formerly know as the Flavian Amphitheatre during the antique Rome, this impressive ruin is an elliptical amphitheatre located at the centre of the city of Rome. It is the largest ever built in the Roman Empire and is indiscutably one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. Originally capable of seating around 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles.
