A GILT-BRONZE MOUNTED KINGWOOD, SATINÉ, AND MAHOGANY COMMODE AFTER THE MODEL BY ANTOINE- Robert GAUDREAUX PARIS, CIRCA 1900-10

with a moulded shaped Rouge de Rance marble top above a pair of doors opening to four drawers, the front applied with ribbon-tied acanthus leaves and flower garlands, the medals cast with Roman Emperors and centered by ovals with a cherub and goat and Ariadne on a leopard, all on a diamond parquetry ground centered by a female mask, the shaped sides with similar mouldings, centered by Hercules and Venus with Athena on moulded scroll legs, with ram's head capitals. Re- gilded.

All mounts have been deposed and regilded. The left door with upper hinge bent. Overall in good condition with the usual minor scratches, nicks, wear to carcass veneers consistent with age and use. The right side door is hard to open as the top of the ram's head obstructs the movement.

This commode is based on the famous kingwood medal cabinet supplied by the Royal cabinet-maker Antoine-Robert Gaudreaux (1682-1746) on 10 January 1739 for the Cabinet Interieur of Louis XV at Versailles. It was referred to at the time as 'Par les Srs Gaudreaux ébéniste et Slodtz frères, sculpteurs, pour servir dans le cabinet aux tableaux avant la petite galerie à Versailles '. The bronze mounts were modelled by the Slodtz brothers. The commode was a popular model amongst Parisian makers during the second half of the 19th century and many variants of it were made.  A similar model sold, Christie's London, September 27, 2007, lot 91 for £48,500 hammer and another sold in these rooms, November 28, 2006, lot 353, for $78,000 hammer.

Although all bronze mounts could not have been removed for inspection of a bronze master model mark, it is believed by repute that the mounts were cast by the bronzier Kahn.
