A large Louis XV style Gilt-Bronze mounted Malachite Clock and pedestal Paris, circa 1880

the clock case centered by a patinated bronze dial surmounted by a nude girl holding a rooster next to a nude boy leaning on a globe and studying a book, the movement stamped BLOT & DROUARD / PARIS / E.D/ 111O, raised on a pedestal centered by a winged putto mask above a foliate floral garland flanked by foliate scroll strap-work, the corners mounted with rams head chutes ending in scrolled acanthus brackets on a canted convex square base on toupie feet.

Overall good condition, the clock lacking one mount to the cresting and with two small screw holes. One pendulum, one key. The pedestal with small hole to center of top, the base with some wear and re-glued chips to canted corners. Overall with some wear, dirt, scratches and areas of oxidation to the gilt-bronze. The malachite with some small chips and losses and restorations. Overall with some old scratches and wear consistent with age and use.

Ledoux-Lebard lists Maison Drouard as being an important manufacturer of the second part of the 19 century. The workshop  was located at 72 Rue du Bac and Tardy lists the clockmaker Blot on rue Taitbout until 1908. It is interesting to compare the clock model on the present lot with a clock surmounting the cartonnier of the bureau plat by Oeben, made circa 1765, illustraded in Alexander Pradère, French Furniture Makers , Sotheby's, p.265. It originally belonged to the Duc de Choiseul-Praslin, Prime Minister for Louis XV, and can be recognized in one of the gouaches by Van Blarenberghe of the interiors of Choiseul's house, circa 1770.
