Condition

Good condition, backed with an additional gessoed canvas by the artist, a few isolated areas of finely patterned craquelure; under UV: heavy varnish makes surface difficult to read.

Hicks created this work as an illustration for Enoch Arden, a poem published by Alfred Lord Tennyson in 1864, during his tenure as England's Poet Laureate.
