Prosper Lecourtier studied sculpture under Coutan and the celebrated animalier sculptor Frémiet.  He exhibited at the Salon almost every year from 1875 to 1924 and was awarded a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. He is known to have collaborated with Hippolyte Moreau and some works are signed by both artists.
