Catalogue Note

The present work is a drawing for Breton's oil painting Jeune femme aux nénuphars (Young Woman Among the Waterlillies) of circa 1879 and illustrated in Marius Vachon, Jules Breton, Paris, 1919, p. 1 with the title Le Miroir Rustique.  The painting was acquired by Samuel Avery directly from the artist and sold to John T. Martin before being acquired by Andy Warhol (and sold Sotheby's, New York, April 29-30, 1988, lot 2811, illustrated).
