Condition

Overall the condition of the bronze is very good. There is some wear to the patina and some greening and dryness in the crevices. There is an area of particular wear to his shin.

Catalogue Note

Alongside his well-known neoclassical marbles William Wetmore Story also created a number of bronze statuettes. Two of these depict Beethoven: one shows the composer standing while the present model shows him seated. This composition was created in 1872-3 and the Queen of Italy acquired a cast.
