Catalogue Note
The accomplished and eclectic French sculptor, Henri Emile Allouard, was trained in Paris under Lequesne and Schanewerck. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1865 to 1928 and won the gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. He was recognized for his innovative combinations of coloured marble and bronze.
This model by Allouard of the iconic image of Michelangelo's Pietà from St Peter's Basilica in Rome demonstrates the sculptors skill in marble carving.
