Le Baiser du Faune was commissioned from Aimé-Jules Dalou by Monsieur Henri Vever and modelled between 1890 and 1894. A unique bronze cast was made for Vever and it was not until after Dalou's death that editions were cast by the Hebrard and Susse foundries.

Dalou has achieved a remarkable tension between the two figures as the nymph attempts to resist the faun's advances pushing her hands against his chest, and yet failing to step away from him. As the bronze turns she almost appears to sink into his embrace. Whilst Dalou is well-known for imbuing his subjects with tender emotions here he creates a more passionate mood. Galerie Delestre exhibited an early terracotta sketch for the group which shows the nymph relaxed and returning the embrace. Evidently Dalou chose rather to increase the element of romantic conflict within the group, giving it a dramatic sense of uncertainty.
