Overall the condition of the bronze is excellent. There is a little loss with an area of solder to the reign on the left side near the horse's mouth. There is some minor wear to the surface consistent with age.

The Retour du pesage is one of the most unusual of Bonheur's racing bronzes. It shows a comfortably seated and relaxed jockey on an impressive horse, sullen but clearly bred for the race, after the mandatory weighing. The sculptor must have observed this scene while sketching in the enclosure on one of his many visits to the races.

The meticulous finishing of the bronze is typical of Bonheur's bronzes. The casting is particularly sharp in the jockey's face, clothing and equipment and the horse's hair is convincingly represented through fine tooling. The bronze also retains all of its fragile original features such as the whip and spurs.
