Catalogue Note

Le grand jockey is Bonheur's greatest sculptural achievement. The bronze depicts a victorious jockey and his exhausted but powerful horse immediately after their race. As the jockey faces the spectators he pats his horse on the neck and keeps it in check. Together, the poised jockey and the forceful horse form a monumental group.

Four sizes of the model were edited and the present cast is in the rare largest size at 95 centimetres. The bronze founder who was most closely involved in Bonheur's lifetime casts was François-Auguste-Hippolyte Peyrol. Peyrol was married to Isidore's sister Juliette and worked in close conjunction with the sculptor. The present Grand Jockey is typical of the finely cast and carefully finished bronzes produced by the Peyrol foundry.
