Catalogue Note
Hubert Noël Louis was a pupil of Jouffroy. He began exhibiting at the Salon in 1863 and contributed to the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle. He was a popular choice for public monumental commissions, such as work for the Palais de Justice in his native town of Saint-Omer. The present marble is carved in a more intimate mood. The sculptor focuses on the soft charms of an informally posed nude, her legs tucked under her and leaning with one arm on the rock.
