Catalogue Note

text

Leaves from three gatherings (paginated in modern pencil 179-94, 196-9, 201-12, 214-23) from a professionally written manuscript Bible, doubtlessly produced for use in the university of Paris in the third quarter of the thirteenth century. The text here corresponds to a section of the Old Testament: the end of II Chronicles, 2-35; I Esra 2-10; Nehemiah 3-13; the work traditionally ascribed to Nehemiah, here called II Esra 1-9; the apocryphal Book of Tobit 1-14; and the Book of Judith 1-15 (with a few leaves lost from the beginning and end of each book except for that at the end of Tobit and the beginning of Judith). The style of the initials seems very close to some of the output of the atelier of Johannes Grusch (see Branner, Manuscript Painting in Paris during the Reign of St. Louis, 1977, pl. 225 for comparison), and perhaps it was executed in that workshop.
