Catalogue Note
The present lot includes two fine decorated Italian manuscript leaves. Item a is that of the end of book iv and the beginning of book v of the magnum opus of the celebrated scholar Boethius, his 'Consolation of Philosophy', written by that author c. 524, apparently when in prison awaiting trial for the crime of treason by the Ostrogothic king, Theodoric the Great. Item b is a nice example of the twelfth-century practice, apparently of Tuscan origin, of creating initials in manuscripts from the bodies of animals (often predominantly fish and birds) in pale pastel colours; close comparison can be made to a manuscript produced in Tuscany (perhaps in the region of Arezzo) in the second quarter of the twelfth century, now BnF. Latin 3862, and another manuscript from Emilia or Tuscany, c. 1200, now BnF. N.a.l. 1576, fols 1-128 (Avril & Zaluska, Manuscrits Enluminés D'Origine Italienne I, 1980, nos. 74, pl. xxxi, especially that of fol. 115 & 99, pl. xli, especially fol. 5).
All from the collection of the late Dr F. Jossi.
