Catalogue Note
First edition of this translation by the Spanish humanist Martin Abarca de Bolea y Castro, father of the poetess Ana Abarca de Bolea. It replaced the antiquated Spanish version first printed by Cromberger in Seville, 1503. Marco Polo's travel book, widely considered an invention in his own lifetime, had a very long afterlife, with incunable editions in Latin (Christopher Columbus's annotated copy being preserved in Seville), German, and Italian; it found further translations in the sixteenth century and was still read for its information about the East well into the seventeenth century.
