Catalogue Note

This charming view of the market at Antibes was owned by the newspaper tycoon and politician William Maxwell Aitken, Lord Beaverbrook (1879-1964) and hung at his home Gun Point at the northern tip of Eleuthera in The Bahamas which was given to him as a reward for his assistance during World War II. Beaverbrook was asked to name any place he would wish to own as a gift from the Crown for his work as Minister for Aircraft Production, Minister of Supply, Minister of War Production and Lord Privy Seal. He chose Gun Point which he inhabited for many years, entertaining many international dignitaries.
