Condition
STRUCTURE
This picture is relined in good overall condition. There are small areas in the sky where old retouchings have discoloured (visible in the catalogue illustration). This picture would benefit from having these retouchings removed and reapplied.
CATALOGUE COMPARISON
The illustration is broadly representative.
PAINT SURFACE
The surface is sound with bright colours and stable paint surface throughout. There are areas of shrinkage and very fine craquelure, particularly apparent in the sky and to the foliage of the tree. However this is only visible upon close inspection.
UNDER ULTRAVIOLET LIGHT
There are areas of retouching in the sky which have discoloured and are visible in the catalogue illustration. There are areas of retouching in the lower left corner and to areas close the the lower right edge of the canvas, probably where tears have been repaired. These retouchings are not visible to the naked eye. There is an uneven varnish over the surface of the picture.
FRAME
This picture is contained in a later moulded plaster and gilt frame.
