the only surviving world map by the important flemish cartographer gemma frisius is this woodcut map produced to accompany the later editions of Peter Apian's Cosmographia.
Gemma is an important link in the chain of great cartographers: he studied under Apian, and in turn was a teacher of Gerard Mercator, two of the greates names from the sixteenth century.
The present map is highly decorative: surmounting the map are the dual figures of Zeus and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor. The map also features windheads, signs of the zodiac, and Ptolemaic climate zones.
