a rare example of the medieval view of the world. The first appearance of this map was in the Rudimentum novitiorum printed at Lübeck in 1475, containing the earliest printed maps that were not merely diagrams. The map was reissued in the Mer des hystoires in Paris, 1488-1489, and Lyon, 1491, the present example. The circular world map is of the medieval type and is independent of either Ptolemaic or portolan sources. It is "a vivid piece of cartographical design" (Shirley).
