Catalogue Note

rare. In this work, a vindication of the Jesuits against the charges levelled by Antoine Arnaud (1560-1619) in his celebrated defence of the University of Paris in 1594, Richeome, an ultramontane Jesuit writer known as the French Cicero of his day, constructs a fascinating history of the Society of Jesus from its foundation, emphasising its achievements in the field of education and in particular the work of the Jesuit missions in Japan, the Far East, America and Brazil.
